Local Coastal Bend Chapter of ASSP – A Great Resource for HSE Professionals

Local Coastal Bend Chapter of ASSP and Brite Star

Brite Star Uniforms attended the Coastal Bend Chapter’s meeting of the American Society of Safety Professionals earlier this week.  Shown in the picture are (L to R) Kyle Moulder, Chapter President; Matthew Herron, Area Director Reg III South Division; and Robert McIntyre, President of Brite Star Uniforms.

ASSP is a global association of occupational safety and health professionals. The association supports OSH professionals in their efforts to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities, in addition to providing education, advocacy, standards development, and a professional community to its members.  Founded in 1911 it has more than 35,000 members and supports more than 150 chapter communities in the US and abroad.

The Coastal Bend Chapter meets at 11:30 AM on the second Tuesday of each month at the Railroad Seafood, 1214 N Chaparral St, Corpus Christi, Texas. The Chapter covers a large geographical area, including Corpus Christi, Victoria, and the Rio Grande Valley. It has added 22 new members since January of this year and currently has a total of 120 members. The chapter has some very informative presentations planned for upcoming meetings and has a big welcome mat out to new members. It’s a great organization!

Kyle Moulder, CSP, ASP, is the new Chapter President and spoke enthusiastically about increasing the membership of the local chapter and the chapter’s activities. Other officers of the Coastal Bend Chapter include: Vice-President Mike Brown, CSP; Nominations & Election Chair Smokey Stevens; and Advisory Board Gerry Luther, CIE, OHST.

Membership in ASSP is a bargain when you consider all the benefits and resources available to members, including networking opportunities, safety and education training, career support, and the list goes on.

This month’s meeting included a presentation by Matthew Herron, MS, PE, CSP, CPE. Matthew is the ASSP’s Area Director Reg III South Division and is based out of San Antonio.  At the meeting, Matthew, who also serves as an Ambassador for BCSP, gave an excellent and very thorough presentation on BCSP Certifications. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is a not-for-profit corporation headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has been setting and certifying the technical competency criteria for safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practitioners since 1969. Matthew provided an explanation of the various BCSP certifications, the benefits of receiving a certification, and the process of going about obtaining certifications.

Brite Star Uniforms is the largest locally-owned uniform service in South Texas. In business since 1955, Brite Star’s routes cover an area from Corpus Christi, to Victoria, to north of San Antonio, to Laredo, and to Edinburg and McAllen.

A big part of Brite Star’s uniform program is safety apparel, including flame resistant uniforms and reflective clothing.  With that in mind, the management of Brite Star feels it is important for the company to support and be active in organizations such as the local chapter of ASSP to support HSE professionals in their sometimes thankless job of keeping all of us safe. Brite Star salutes the HSE profession!
